Sector agreement on gas production in the energy transition

The Dutch government, energy companies, and key stakeholders have joined forces in a new Sector Agreement focused on managing the gradual reduction of natural gas production in line with the country’s energy transition goals. This collaborative effort aims to ensure a reliable energy supply while accelerating the shift toward sustainable energy sources.

A central element of the agreement is the vital role of existing gas infrastructure. By upgrading and adapting current pipelines and facilities, the sector is preparing to integrate renewable gases like green hydrogen and biomethane into the network. This approach not only supports the reduction of carbon emissions but also strengthens the resilience and flexibility of the Dutch energy system during the transition.

The NOGAT B.V. pipeline, which connects Scandinavia to the Netherlands, is the largest transporter of natural gas in the Dutch North Sea. In the context of this agreement, we focus on optimizing and further integrating the pipeline network at the North Sea and exploring opportunities for future repurposing of our pipelines to support the energy transition.
